Rewrite and open source PhysicsDiet.com
I’m going to start hacking on this over the weekend to see how far I can get. I’ll have some time to work on it next month so I’d like to decide for sure if this is the direction I want to go before then.

OK, don't open source the ASP.NET version. Send the code to me, let investigate the glaring problems to see if I can fix them and I'll send the code back to you for deployment. Any objections to that? OK, good, how can we get started? :)

FYI: I'm working the next version of PhysicsDiet.com now. See the details on the blog: http://blog.physicsdiet.com/im-working-on-physicsdietcom-again

I would love to take the ASP.NET code and get it working.

No, unfortunately I've been spending every spare moment working on my primary business. And no, open sourcing the ASP.NET version is not an option because I will not have a dev environment to manage the project.
If someone out there has the time and interest to try and fight WebHost4Life to get the ASP.NET shit working I might be open to that. But I just don't have the spare cycles to deal with PhysicsDiet.com right now.

Would you please consider open sourcing the ASP.NET version as it stands so some forward motion can be made? I'd like to start fixing some of the glaring problems that exist (cannot save profiles is a good example).

Mark, do you have room for a 2GB MS SQL database? Feel free to email me at administrator at physicsdiet dot com

I would be interested in helping out on this effort. Please feel free to contact me if you need a hand, either on the rewriting or in some temporary hosting. I have a few dedicated windows servers and could probably match whatever config you need to get things back up and going.

I love the idea of open sourcing PD, and would definitely be interested in helping out!

I said I'd work on this over the weekend, unfortunately I didn't get a chance to. This is the busiest time of the year for my business, so it takes priority. I am going to have some time in September, and things should slow down for me in 10 days or so. I should be able to start doing some research and playing then. I'll keep you guys updated.

Yes, the WIthings is awesome. I have used it in conjunction with your physics diet site for several months.

+1 for open sourcing it as well. If it's on github I'll be happy to fork and help out on things. I've had some experience integrating javascript html5 charts into some of the rails apps that I have used and love the site.

Ok, that thing looks amazing.

@Matt: Sounds good. I created a ruby wrapper to their API at http://github.com/JGaudette/wiscale if interested.
I'm right there with you on the dislike for flash and IE :-)
-
@Jon I will research Withings since I know nothing about it. And if I make this leap, I'd love the help.

Just to repeat what I've said in another comment. If I rewrite, I will only do it in Rails. I work with Rails now full time. Doing PD in Rails 3 would actually help me rather than just distract me. I know what my hosting options are with Rails. I'll use a JavaScript charting package unless I have no other choice. I hate flash almost as much as I hate IE. I probably wouldn't support older versions of IE. And if I had any trouble with IE8, I wouldn't have any problem ignoring it too.

+1 for open source. I know the data loss was my fault for not backing up, but I'd probably run my own server given the opportunity. May even be able to help with front end html/css/javascripting, my server side is limited to php/
Withings does look interesting, i would pick it up if worked with PD.

@Paul: I fallen in love with my Withings scale since I've had it, too. It's fantastic to be able to stop using a notepad and pencil! Do you have any suggestions for fixing up the graphs? I agree they need to be improved.
@Matt: Just portions of the front page, but I see your point and have replaced it with something original. No offense was intended. My offer to help with an open source PD still stands.

+1 for open sourcing it! I would REALLY love to see the graphing algorithms used to create the charts in PD. I know there was a discussion about the smoothing equation/parameters used several years ago in the forums, but those are offline now. :-/
Nice job with the Withings integration Jon...that's something I wished PD had since January when I got my scale. (I've been manually entering the data in PD each day). The graphing needs a lot of work though...

Seriously, you copy pasted?
